Australia and Bangladesh locked horns in the eighth match of the Women’s T20 World Cup 2023 at St George's Park in Gqeberha. While Bangladesh skipper Nigar Sultana showed great grit and determination, the other batters failed to put up a show and as a result, the defending champions continued their winning streak in the tournament, winning the contest comfortably by eight wickets.

Bangladesh won the toss and elected to bat first in the game. Australia got the early breakthroughs when Darcie Brown sent the Bangladesh openers Shamima Sultana and Murshida Khatum back to the pavilion within the first four overs and set the tone straight for her side. But the captain put up a memorable knock and got the game going after the early blows.

Nigar Sultana shared a crucial 31-run stand Sobhana Mostary before sharing a 44-run stand with Shorna Akhter, thereby being the key contributor in both partnerships. She kept the scoreboard ticking and brought up her half-century in the way before being dismissed in the 19th over. But apart from her, no other batter could manage to score runs as Georgia Wareham did the work for Australia with the ball, picking up three wickets. As a result, Bangladesh finished at 107/7.

Skipper Meg Lanning leads the chase from front

Australia’s start to the chase was a little shaky as their opening batter Beth Mooney was dismissed very early in the third over. Alyssa Healy was then joined by Australian skipper Meg Lanning as the two carried the game forward. Scoring was difficult on the pitch, and the Bangladeshi bowlers too did a brilliant job by not giving away too many runs.

Healy and Lanning shared a 69-run stand for the second wicket before the wicketkeeper-batter was dismissed for a 36-ball 37. All-rounder Ashleigh Gardner was sent up the order as she joined Lanning on the crease, and the duo took Australia to their second consecutive victory in the tournament. They shared an unbeaten 33-run stand and chased the score down with 10 balls to spare to continue their dominance on top of the points table. Georgia Wareham was adjudged the Player of the Match for her match-defining 3/20.
