New Zealand and Sri Lanka locked horns in the 27th match of the ICC T20 World Cup 2022 at the SCG in Sydney. New Zealand required a win from the game as their previous match was abandoned due to rain after they won their first game against Australia, whereas Sri Lanka had lost their previous game against Australia after winning their first one against Ireland. The Blackcaps managed to pull out of misery and bagged an impressive 65-run win.
New Zealand won the toss and opted to bat, but their start was awful as Sri Lankan bowlers stormed through the Blackcaps’ lineup. The powerful openers Finn Allen and Devon Conway were dismissed within the first three overs, courtesy of Maheesh Theekshana and Dhananjaya de Silva. New Zealand’s troubles worsened when skipper Kane Williamson was dismissed inside the powerplay when Kasun Rajitha struck to pick his first wicket.
It was then the partnership between Daryl Mitchell and Glenn Phillips which helped New Zealand pull themselves out of the pressure situation. The duo shared an 84-run partnership for the fourth wicket, which was spearheaded majorly by Phillips as he dominated the show. He went on to complete a composed half-century and converted it into a magnificent hundred, which helped New Zealand post a defendable target of 168 runs.
New Zealand bowlers shine, take their team to top of the points table
New Zealand bowlers did not let the Sri Lankan batters get off to a high start to their chase, as Tim Southee and Trent Boult wreaked havoc on the field. Southee struck in the very first over and dismissed Pathum Nissanka, which was followed by Boult striking not just once, but thrice in his first two overs as Sri Lanka’s top-order unit came crashing down. While Nissanka and De Silva were dismissed for a duck, Kusal Mendis and Charith Asalanka managed to score just four runs.
Sri Lankan batters needed to build a partnership thereon to survive in the game and in order to take the game deep, but the Kiwi bowlers gave them a very hard time. Bhanuka Rajapaksa tried hard and managed to score a 22-ball 34 before walking out of the pavilion after Lockie Ferguson dismissed him. Things fell out of place for the reigning Asian champions, and they kept losing wickets frequently. As a result, New Zealand bagged another big win and defeated Sri Lanka by 65 runs.

I wonder if New Zealand fans can come to terms with seeing a team without Boult and Southee one day. They have been gems. And I don't think they get talked about as much as a few other great combinations have been
