India took an unassailable 3-1 lead in the five-match series against England by winning the fourth T20I at the Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium in Pune on Friday, January 31, by 15 runs.
It wasn't an easy win for India by any stretch of the imagination as they had to overcome difficult starts in both innings. After Jos Buttler won the toss for the first time in the series and opted to field first, India lost three wickets in the second over bowled by right-arm seamer Saqib Mahmood. Sanju Samson, Tilak Varma, and Suryakumar Yadav were the batters dismissed.
Rinku Singh and Abhishek Sharma calmed the nerves with a 45-run partnership off 32 balls. However, both the left-handed batters could not capitalise on their starts. After they were dismissed by the 11th over, India were in all sorts of trouble at 79/5.
Making his comeback to the Indian team, Shivam Dube got a reprieve when he was batting on 0 as Buttler dropped a tough chance. He joined forces with Hardik Pandya to stitch a vital 87-run partnership off 45 balls to take India to a strong position. Both batters were dismissed after scoring 53 runs each. Hardik and Dube faced 30 and 34 balls, respectively.
The home side finished at 181/9 in their 20 overs. Mahmood was the pick of the bowlers for England as he finished with figures of 3/35 in four overs. Meanwhile, Jamie Overton picked up two wickets.
In reply, England got off to a whirlwind start as Ben Duckett and Phil Salt added 62 runs in the first six overs. Ravi Bishnoi broke the threatening partnership in the last ball of the powerplay as he dismissed Duckett, who scored a 19-ball 39. Salt and Buttler fell in the next two overs as they were out to Axar Patel and Bishnoi, respectively.
Harry Brook played some scintillating shots even as he lost his teammates from the other end. Harshit Rana, who came in as a concussion substitute for Dube, bagged the wickets of Liam Livingstone and Jacob Bethell. However, between these two wickets, Varun Chakaravarthy dismissed Brook and Brydon Carse for 51 (26) and 0 (2) in the 15th over.
Jamie Overton and Adil Rashid tried hard but they had too much work to do at the backend of the innings. The Three Lions were bowled out for 166 in 19.4 overs as Arshdeep Singh bagged the last wicket. Harshit and Bishnoi picked up three wickets apiece. Meanwhile, Chakaravarthy added two more wickets to his tally.

How can an out & out bowler replace a batter who bowls part time !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! #INDvsENG

Opportunities can come from the most unexpected places. Harshit Rana, at the start of play, probably never imagined he’d play such a pivotal role in the game. Life. Cricket.

Just maybe it had to be a change of format to get the counties to agree many years ago .. plus to get FTA TV onside as it’s a shorter 3 hr show .. I wouldn’t be surprised at all if it goes to a T20 comp eventually .. 👍 https://t.co/gShbUzJK6v
