England and Australia continued their ongoing ODI series by facing each other in the third ODI at the Riverside Ground in Chester-le-Street, on Tuesday, September 24. The clash began with England winning the toss and opting to bowl first. The visitors needed one more win to seal the series after winning the first two games and leading 0-2.
The match began with Australian openers Matthew Short and skipper Mitchell Marsh departing early, after adding just 14 and 24 runs, respectively. Steve Smith's hard-fought half-century (60 off 82) and Alex Carey's unbeaten 77 formed the backbone of the Australian innings.
Cameron Green (42 off 49) and Aaron Hardie (44 off 26) had valuable cameos in the middle and provided the late flourish. All-rounder Glenn Maxwell also played a small part, smashing a 25-ball 30. The visitors put up a competitive total of 304/7 in their allotted 50 overs.
For England, Jofra Archer was the wrecker-in-chief with the ball, picking two wickets in his quota of 10 overs. Brydon Carse, Jacob Bethell, Will Jacks, and Liam Livingstone also bagged one wicket each.

Harry Brook and Will Jacks put up a 156-run partnership
England's chase was shaky, similar to the previous match, as they lost openers Phil Salt and Ben Duckett early to Mitchell Starc's bowling. At 11/2, the hosts seemed to be in trouble. However, Jack and Harry Brook had other plans.
The duo stitched up a match-winning partnership of 156 runs off 147 deliveries, completely turning the tide in England's favour. Jacks contributed a brilliant 84 off 82 balls, while the host's stand-in skipper smashed an unbeaten 110 off 94 deliveries. Their aggressive batting, which included 22 fours and three sixes between them, put immense pressure on the Australian bowling attack.
Even after Jack's dismissal, the Three Lions maintained their momentum. Livingstone joined Brook at the crease and played a quick-fire innings of 33 not out off 20 balls. This partnership further accelerated the scoring rate, pushing them ahead of the required run rate.
As rain interrupted play, England found themselves at 254/4 in 37.4 overs, comfortably ahead of the par score by 46 runs. Despite attempts to resume play, persistent showers forced the officials to call off the match, handing the hosts a victory via the DLS method. For Australia, Starc and Green bagged two wickets a piece. Meanwhile, Brook was awarded the Player of the Match for his maiden ODI century.
