Twitter Reactions: Imad Wasim stars as Islamabad United beat Multan Sultans to clinch PSL 2024 title
Islamabad United defeated Multan Sultans by two wickets in the PSL final.
Imad Wasim starred as Islamabad United clinched their maiden title, edging out Multan Sultans by two wickets on the final delivery in a low-scoring contest in the 2024 Pakistan Super League (PSL) final. The clash, held on March 18 at the National Stadium Karachi, saw Multan Sultans facing their third consecutive upset in the tournament's final, reflecting their heartbreak from the previous year's showdown against Lahore Qalandars which they lost by just one run.
Opting to bat first upon winning the toss, Multan Sultans, led by Mohammad Rizwan, faltered from the start of their innings. Wasim provided an early breakthrough for United, dismissing opener Yasir Khan in the second over. In the final delivery of the same over, he then got David Willey, who, while attempting to push the ball away on the offside, rattled his stumps.
United captain, Shadab Khan, added to the Sultans' woes by claiming the crucial wicket of his counterpart Rizwan for 26 runs and later dismissing Usman Khan in the first delivery of the 16th over. Usman Khan was the standout batter for the Sultans, scoring a stunning 57 off 40 balls, including seven boundaries and a maximum. Shadab continued his dominance by also sending Usma Mir back to the pavilion for just six runs in the same over, thereby completing his three-wicket haul.
Wasim, the slow left-arm bowler, went on to showcase his bowling prowess by picking up wickets of Khushdil Shah and Chris Jordan in consecutive deliveries in the 17th over, before removing Johnson Charles in the 12th over. With impressive figures of 5/23, Wasim played a crucial role alongside Shadab, who ended with figures of 3/32, in restricting Sultans to a below-par total of 159 runs.
In pursuit of the 160-run target, United got off to a solid start, amassing 46 runs within the powerplay. Opener Martin Guptill blazed all guns with a brilliant half-century off just 32 deliveries before being run out by Iftikhar Ahmed. The efforts from the Sultans' bowlers were not enough as United chased down the target on the final delivery of the game to clinch the prestigious title.
