India outclassed Australia comprehensively in the first Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT 2024-25), at the Optus Stadium in Perth. After winning the Toss, India opted to bat first and were restricted to just 150 runs by Australia. But the visitors showcased brilliant effort with the ball and the hosts were bundled up for just 104 runs with Indian pacers claiming all 10 wickets.

In their second innings, the Indian team made use of the batting-friendly surface after the grass wore out. Yashasvi Jaiswal notched up his maiden Ton in Australia as the opener scored 161 off 297, and was well complemented by KL Rahul’s 77 off 176. But the cherry on the cake was Virat Kohli’s 81st century. As soon as the star India batter ended his six-year century draught in Tests, Team India declared on 487/6. As a result, hosts Australia were set a massive target of 534 runs.

The Indian pacers were again on song and they picked three Australian wickets before the Stumps on Day 3. Day 4 saw the downfall sink further as Mohammed Siraj and Jasprit Bumrah unleashed crisp lines and length. Travis Head (89) and Mitchell Marsh (47) provided a moment of respite for their team in their 82-run stand for the sixth wicket. But a draw or a win was inevitable.

For India, stand-in Captain Jasprit Bumrah and Siraj picked three wickets each while Washington Sundar and Harshith Rana picked two and one each as India won by 295 runs. It is also worth noting that, Bumrah was the linchpin behind Australia’s dismal batting in the first innings. The stand-in Indian captain picked a fifer giving away just 30 runs in 18 overs. India lead the five-match series by 1-0 with the next game being a pink ball one in Adelaide.
