The Harmanpreet Kaur-led team India registered a comprehensive win by eight wickets against West Indies women in the final group match in the ongoing Tri-Nation Series at the Buffalo Park, in East London, on January 30.
Put to bat first by the Indian side, the Caribbean nation were immediately on the backfoot when the side lost two wickets in under four overs. However, skipper Hayley Matthews took the onus to get the side to attain a respectable total in the first innings.
Carving out a delicate knock, Matthews got 34 runs from 34 deliveries and was later taken over by Zaida James to steer the side to score 94 runs in their 20 overs of the contest. Deepti Sharma’s masterclass with the ball restricted the rival side form hitting big.
Moreover, she returned sensational bowling figures of 3/11 in her four overs at an economy 2.75. Along with her, Pooja Vastrakar racked up two wickets under her belt to hand her side the momentum in the contest.
India Women comfortably chase down 95 in second innings
In response to the total set by the Windies, the Women in Blue took complete control with the bat, just like they did in the first innings. Experimenting with Jemimah Rodrigues up the order seems to have worked for the team as she along with the skipper Harmanpreet Kaur comfortably led the side to emerge victorious in the contest.
The duo of Jemimah and Harmanpreet remained unbeaten during the run chase and returned scores of 42 and 32 runs, respectively to wrap up the contest by eight wickets. India had already cemented their spot in the summit clash of the Tri-Series as they will take on hosts South Africa on Thursday, February 2.
The finals undoubtedly will be a big one for the Women in Blue and the Harmanpreet Kaur-led team will aim to clinch the series. The win in the Tri-Series will surely lift their spirits ahead of the Women’s T20 World Cup 2023, considering that the side endured a massive beating to Australia recently at home.
