India Women took on United Arab Emirates Women in Match 5 of the Women’s Asia Cup 2024 at the Rangiri Dambulla International Stadium in Dambulla on July 21. UAE won the toss and opted to bowl first. India lost Smriti Mandhana early as she departed after scoring 13 off 9 and Shafali Verma followed suit scoring a quickfire 37 off 18 balls. Dayalan Hemalatha could not extend her stay more than two runs as Jemimah Rodrigues helped Harmanpreet Kaur’s cause.
The duo put up a 54-run stand for the fourth wicket before Jemimah walked back after scoring 14 off 13. Harmanpreet found a new partner in crime in the form of Richa Ghosh and both batters stitched a 75-run stand for the fifth wicket. While Harmanpreet got run out on 66 off 47, Richa remained unbeaten on a splendid 64 off 29 as India posted a humongous target of 201 for 5.
While chasing, UAE lost Theertha Satish and Rinitha Rajit quickly as they scored four and seven respectively with UAE’s score 24 in 5.2 overs. Samaira Dharindharka had just five runs to contribute as Esha Oza and Kavisha Egodage stitched a much-needed 40-run stand for the fourth wicket. Oza departed scoring 38 off 36 and the lower order crumbled with taxing pace of innings making the difference at the end.
India win by huge margin to lead Group A
It all boiled down to 87 runs needed off the last over with Egodage on strike and a string of tailenders to come up if she departs. An impossible task at hand, Radha Yadav bowled some tight line to not give any room and they managed just eight runs with Rajitha getting run-out on the final ball as India won the game by a hefty margin of 78 runs. For India, Deepti Sharma starred with two wickets as every other bowler chipped one each.
