Washington Sundar made his Test comeback after three years and on the very first day, the spinner proved his value in the longest format. New Zealand started well after opting to bat first in Pune as opener Devon Conway once again played some brilliant cricket to keep the Kiwi ship sailing. Batting at number four, Rachin Ravindra looked fantastic as well, as the duo looked well in control of the match.

New Zealand had the upper hand in the first session and for the majority part of the second. However, just before Tea, India captain Rohit Sharma brought back Washington for his second spell and that changed the complexion of the game. Kiwi batters looked comfortable until then but things changed drastically as Washington picked up back-to-back wickets of Rachin and Tom Blundell just before Tea.

Rachin departed for 65 runs off 105 deliveries after he failed to read the line and turn of Washington’s off-spin. Soon after that, wickets fell like a house of cards. Mitchell Santner tried to build a partnership in the end but he had no support from the other end. The all-rounder made 33 runs as New Zealand posted 259 runs in the first innings.

The combination of the spinners helped India dominate on the first day against the Blackcaps. Alongside Washington Sundar who took seven wickets on his comeback in the longest format, Ravichandran Ashwin put up a great effort and took three wickets. The spinners put the visitors on a tough track which helped the Indian team to restrict them at 259 on day 1 itself.

The Kiwi team management will be highly disappointed with how things fared towards the end of the second session and the beginning of the third. They were in good control of the game at one point but their middle and lower order batters had no answer to Washington’s spin as the 25-year-old ended the innings with a seven-wicket haul.

Meanwhile, the Indian team management deserves credit for bringing Washington in for the second Test. He was not part of the Indian squad in the first game and also wasn’t in the scheme of things. Now with a memorable performance in Pune, he is very likely to get a longer run and may even travel with the Indian team for the upcoming Border-Gavaskar Trophy, which is slated to begin on November 22.
