India lost the ODI series against Bangladesh when they lost the second game at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium on December 7, Wednesday. But the Men in Blue showed how capable they are when they took on the hosts for the third and final game of the series at the Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium in Chattogram as they posted an enormous target of 410 runs for Bangladesh to chase.
India’s batting was led by opening batter Ishan Kishan who made his way into the playing combination after skipper Rohit Sharma was ruled out. Shikhar Dhawan’s poor form continued as he could manage to score just three runs off eight balls as Bangladesh earned an early breakthrough. But Kishan and Virat Kohli did not let that setback affect the game as they put up a monstrous 290-run stand for the second wicket.
Though the Men in Blue lost the series, this game would be a memorable one for both Kishan and Kohli. While the former notched up his first-ever century and converted it into a double-ton to script history, Kohli bagged his 72nd international ton as the two punished the bowlers and kept hitting the big shots mercilessly.
During Ishan Kishan’s carnage, Kohli kept rotating the strike brilliantly to give the youngster the most opportunities. Kishan’s century was quick, but his double ton was even quicker as he aimed all his shots towards the boundary line. Before being dismissed, he scored 210 runs in 131 deliveries, notching up 24 fours and ten humungous sixes, at a strike rate of 160.30.
After Kishan’s dismissal, Virat Kohli got going and proved, again, why he is the best in business. He brought up his 44th ODI century, 72nd overall, and the first in this format since August 2019. Kohli overtook Ricky Ponting’s tally of 71 international centuries to move to the second place in the list of players with the most international centuries.
A brilliant Washington Sundar cameo helps India register a 400+ score
He was calm and composed throughout his time on the field and kept piling up runs. After their dismissal, Washington Sundar’s cameo of a 27-ball 37 helped India cross the 400-run mark on the scoreboard. The entire Indian dressing room stood up and gave the centurions a standing ovation as both of them achieved a unique feat in the process.
Ishan Kishan’s swashbuckling double century and Virat Kohli’s 91-ball 113 propelled India to a mammoth total of 409/8 at the end of 50 overs. With this total, the Indian side also equalled South Africa's record of scoring most 400+ totals in ODI cricket, marking this as the sixth.
