Twitter Reactions: Lucknow Super Giants bounce back in style to script record-setting victory against Punjab Kings
LSG posted the second-highest team total in the tournament's history by notching up 257/5 in 20 overs.
The 38th match of the Indian Premier League 2023 in Mohali witnessed Lucknow Super Giants enter their name in history books as they registered the second-highest team total in the history of the tournament, notching up a humungous 257/5 in their stipulated 20 overs against the Punjab Kings. The visitors bounced back stronger than ever to win the game by a huge margin of 56 runs.
Winning the toss, PBKS skipper Shikhar Dhawan, who was returning to the game after missing three games, put LSG to bat first. KL Rahul and Kyle Mayers got their side off to a fiery start before the former departed scoring mere 12 runs off nine deliveries. But the other LSG batters had a very clear intention, and it was reflected through their performance on the field as they racked up runs in plenty.
After Mayers’ blitzkrieg of 24-ball 54, Ayush Badoni and Marcus Stoinis took charge of the game and added 89 runs to the third-wicket partnership, off just 47 deliveries. Even after Badoni’s dismissal, the scorecard kept ticking as Nicholas Pooran joined Stoinis in the middle and the duo put up a 76-run partnership for the fourth wicket off mere 30 deliveries.
The PBKS bowlers kept struggling to pick wickets throughout the game. Though Rabada got the prized scalps of Rahul and Mayers, he ended up conceding 52 runs in his four-over spell. Towards the end of the innings, Deepak Hooda’s quick and unbeaten six-ball 11 helped Lucknow post a 258-run target for the hosts to chase as LSG achieved a historic milestone.

The focus then shifted to Punjab’s innings as the batters geared up for the big chase. Things fell out of place for PBKS as openers Prabhsimran Singh and Dhawan were dismissed cheaply, scoring nine and one runs respectively. But even though PBKS lost two early wickets in the powerplay, Atharva Taide and Sikandar Raza put up a 78-run partnership for the third wicket as PBKS saw a ray of hope.
But the batters could not keep up with the required run rate, which kept increasing with every passing ball. Liam Livingstone unleashed his batting prowess, but his time on the field was cut short by Ravi Bishnoi, who had Taide in his previous over. Sam Curran and Jitesh Sharma played some fabulous cricketing shots down the order, but that was just not enough to win. All their efforts went in vain as LSG bagged a sensational victory.
