England finally opened their account in the ongoing ICC Cricket Cricket World Cup, registering a thumping 137-run win against Bangladesh at the Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association Stadium in Dharamsala on October 10, Tuesday.

Bangladesh skipper Shakib Al Hasan won the toss and opted to field first. Openers Jonny Bairstow and Dawid Malan provided a flying start for the Jos Buttler-led side, producing a 115-run opening stand before Shakib dismissed the former for 52 runs in the 18th over. Malan and Joe Root, though, combined 151 runs for the second wicket.

Malan smashed 140 off 107 deliveries, including 16 boundaries and five maximums before being dismissed by Mahedi Hasan. Scoring his sixth century in the ODI he scripted a new record, becoming the fastest player to achieve the milestone in the 50-over format. Root, on the other hand, played a blistering knock of 68-ball 82 runs.

Bangladesh then produced a late counterattack as England could add only 68 runs with the loss of seven wickets. Mahedi Hasan finished with a four-fer despite conceding 71 runs in 8 overs. Meanwhile, Shoriful Islam took three wickets and gave up 75 runs, in his full quota. However, the defending champions managed to post a mammoth total of  364 in allotted overs.

Fast bowler Reece Topley claimed three wickets in the first seven overs, and Chris Woakes added fourth as Bangladesh rattled from the beginning of their chase. Following that, opener Liton Das and Mushfiqur Rahim, both of whom scored half-centuries, attempted to steady the innings. The wicketkeeper-batter along with Rahim put up a partnership of 72 runs before falling to Woakes for 76 off just 66 deliveries, with Bangladesh reeling at 121/5.

Rahim then shared a brief partnership with Towhid Hridoy before Topley finished his innings for 51 runs, making him the fourth victim of the English pacer. England bowlers continued their attack as they restricted the Tigers at 227 in 48.2 overs with Sam Curran taking their last wicket of Taskin Ahmed.
