Twitter Reactions: Mark Wood dazzles with fifer, Mitchell Marsh’s century helps Australia post 263 on Day 1 of 3rd Ashes Test

The Ben Stokes-led England trail by 195 runs, as they scored 68 runs on Day 1 of the third Ashes Test at Headingley, in Leeds, on Wednesday, July 6. Australia could only manage to get 263 runs on the board as the English bowling attack came all guns blazing to land the blows in the first innings of the contest.

Stokes made the right call during the toss and decided to field first. What followed was sheer domination by the English bowling attack as got the wickets early in the contest. Seasoned pacer Stuart Broad got the prized scalp of David Warner, dismissing him for a record-extending 16th time during the third Test for a mere four runs.

Usman Khawaja and Marnus Labuschagne too were sent packing for paltry scores of 13 and 21 runs, respectively. Steve Smith, who featured in his 100th Test, too failed to produce a vital knock, as he was dismissed for 22 off 31 balls.

Down the order, Mitchell Marsh got off on the right foot as he tried hard to bail his side out of the precarious situation. Marsh scored 118 off 118 balls which featured 17 boundaries and four maximums. However, Broad drew curtains on his magnificent innings upon which the rest of the Australian batting unit fell like a pack of cards. 

Mark Wood and Chris Woakes were bang on point in maintaining razor-sharp line and length which paid them dividends. Notably, Wood returned a five-wicket haul, whereas Woakes got three wickets in the first innings to restrict Australia to 263 runs. 

In response to the total, England failed to extend their domination as they lost early wickets in their first innings. Pat Cummins got the important scalps of Ben Duckett for two runs and Harry Brook for three runs in under seven overs of the contest. Marsh got the crucial scalp of Zak Crawley for 33 runs as England were restricted to 68 runs for the loss of three wickets at stumps on Day 1. As a result, this triggered the fans to share their views on today's game.
