The multi-format white-ball series between South Africa and Australia began in brilliant fashion for the visitors. Taking on the Proteas in the first T20I at the Kingsmead International Cricket Stadium on Wednesday, August 30, in the first T20I, Australia put forth a significantly depleted line-up with as many as four debutants.

However, that did not stop the side from registering a mammoth victory. Coming in to bat first after losing the toss, Australia got off to a subpar start to the game as openers Travis Head and Matt Short were only able to score six and 20 runs, respectively. After the fall of the first wicket, skipper Mitchell Marsh came in to bat and changed the flow of the game.

Marsh played a brilliant knock, scoring 92* runs in 49 deliveries. His knock was crucial for the side in posting a mammoth total on the board. In the middle order, Tim David showcased his class as well, scoring 64 runs in 28 deliveries, and with Aaron Hardie adding 23 on the board, Australia scored a daunting 226 runs.

Lizaad Williams was the best performer for South Africa, taking three wickets. However, he conceded 44 runs in four overs. Furthermore, Marco Jansen, Gerald Coetzee and Tabraiz Shamsi took one wicket each.

Tanveer Sanhga shines as Australia clinch victory

Aiming to chase down a target of 227, South Africa got off to a good start as opener Reeza Hendricks scored 56 off 43. However, the rest of the batting line-up could not add much. Rassie van der Dussen added 21 while Marco Jansen scored 20.

It was a game that belonged to the Australian bowlers. Tanveer Sangha was the highest wicket-taker, with four wickets to his name in four overs for 31 runs. Marcus Stoinis took three wickets and conceded 18 runs in three overs, with debutant Spencer Johnson taking two wickets and Sean Abott striking once as the Proteas were dismissed for a paltry 115 inside 16 overs to lose by 111 runs.
