With the highly-anticipated ODI World Cup being just a couple of weeks away, India and Australia are getting some much-needed game time under their belts, playing in a three-match ODI series.

India opted to bowl first at the IS Bindra Stadium in Mohali on a track that seemed quite flat. Mohammed Siraj, who blew away Sri Lanka in the Asia Cup final with a six-for, was rested and the experienced Mohammed Shami started proceedings with the new ball.

The 33-year-old struck off the fourth ball of the innings as he dismissed Mitchell Marsh with a ball that moved away after pitching to find the nick and Shubman Gill did the rest at first slip.

After the early setback, the experienced duo of David Warner and Steve Smith countered a difficult phase, where Shami and Bumrah made the new ball talk. After the shine of the ball went off, the batters capitalised and Warner, in particular, led the charge.

The southpaw was out for 52 off 53 balls, trying to hit Ravindra Jadeja out of the park. Smith also departed as he was cleaned up by Shami with a beautiful delivery that jagged back in to rattle his stumps after taking the edge of his bat. India were a bit sloppy on the field, missing some straightforward chances, including Shreyas Iyer's drop of Warner when the southpaw was on 14.

Marnus Labuschagne played well for his 49-ball 39 but was bizarrely stumped off Ravichandran Ashwin after Smith and Warner's 94-run stand ended. Cameron Green dug deep for his uncharacteristic knock of 31 off 52 balls, but the 62-run partnership between Josh Inglis and Marcus Stoinis gave Australia some momentum.

Shami used the slower balls to good effect in the death overs and picked up three more wickets to finish with career-best figures of 5/51 in 10 overs in hot and humid conditions. Australian skipper Pat Cummins played a fine unbeaten cameo of 21 off nine balls as the tourists were bowled out for 276 in 50 overs.

X was abuzz with reactions to Mohammed Shami's performance and the Australia innings:
