The breathtaking action continued in the Indian Premier League 2023 as Mumbai Indians hosted Gujarat Titans in match 57 on Friday, May 12 at the Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai. Gujarat captain Hardik Pandya won the toss and invited Mumbai to bat first.
MI openers Rohit Sharma and Ishan Kishan got their team off to a great start as they added 61 runs for the first wicket off 37 balls. Their partnership was broken by Rashid Khan who dismissed both Rohit (29 off 18) and Kishan (31 off 20) in the seventh over of the innings.
Suryakumar Yadav walked in at number three and got involved in a 65-run stand with Vishnu Vinod (30 off 20) off 42 balls for the fourth wicket. Mohit Sharma brought his side back into the game by breaking the partnership and getting Vinod out before he could hurt Titans more.
Following his dismissal, Suryakumar Yadav played one of the best knocks of his career and brought up his maiden IPL hundred scoring 103* off 49 balls smashing 11 fours and six sixes in his innings. Courtesy of his splendid knock, MI posted a massive total of 218/5 on the board. Rashid Khan was the pick of the bowlers for GT as he picked 4/30 in his four-over spell.
In reply, Gujarat got off to a miserable start as they lost their in-form batter Wriddhiman Saha in the second over itself with Akash Madhwal getting him out Leg Before Wicket (LBW). Captain Hardik Pandya also couldn’t do much and departed after scoring 4 off 3 in the third over.
Gujarat were in all sorts of trouble as Madhwal returned in the fourth over and destroyed the stumps of Shubman Gill (6 off 9). Vijay Shankar (29 off 14) also lost his stumps against Piyush Chawla to leave his team reeling at 48/4 in 6.1 overs.
Rashid Khan's spectacular all-round show goes in vain
David Miller (41 off 26) and Rahul Tewatia (14 off 13) kept their team’s hopes alive with a 45-run stand off 29 balls. However, after their dismissals on consecutive deliveries, Gujarat were staring down the barrel at 100/7 after 12.1 overs. When everything seemed over for GT, Rashid Khan rose to the occasion and played a blistering knock of 79 off 32 balls clobbering three fours and ten sixes in his innings.
Gujarat were able to salvage some pride due to Rashid and managed to reach 191/8 in their allotted 20 overs handing a 27-run victory to Mumbai. Akash Madhwal was the pick of the bowlers for MI (3/31) while Kumar Kartikeya (2/37, 3 overs) and Piyush Chawla (2/36) picked up two wickets each. Following their win, Mumbai climbed to the third spot on the points table with 14 points to their name while Gujarat maintained their top spot with 16 points.
