Varun Chakaravarthy made a last-minute entry into India's squad for the Champions Trophy 2025, replacing Yashasvi Jaiswal.

Yashasvi was named in India's squads for the ODI series against England as well as the Champions Trophy. He made his debut in the 50-over format against the Three Lions in the first ODI in Nagpur. However, the talented youngster was dismissed for 15 off 22 balls. Shreyas Iyer, who scored a fluent half-century in that game, revealed that he wasn't a part of India's initial playing XI but made the cut after Virat Kohli encountered a knee problem.

This suggested that Yashasvi was a part of India's plans from the outset. However, the southpaw failed to grab the one opportunity he had and it has cost him his spot in the Champions Trophy side. Interestingly, in Yashasvi's absence, India have only two specialist openers in their lineup - Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill. However, KL Rahul can always slot in at the top of the order if needed as he has done that for India in the past.

By adding Chakaravarthy to the squad, India have five spin-bowling options in the Champions Trophy. Kuldeep Yadav, Ravindra Jadeja, Axar Patel, and Washington Sundar are the other spinners in the side.

Chakaravarthy has been in sensational form since his return to the national team last year. He made his 50-over debut for India during the second ODI against England in Cuttack. The 33-year-old picked up the wicket of Phil Salt and conceded 54 runs in his 10 overs.

Yashasvi, on the other hand, was left out of the side for the second ODI. The Mumbai batter will now have to wait for his chance to make it back to the ODI setup.
