Nitish Kumar Reddy walked out to bat when India were reduced to 191/6. Rishabh Pant got out while playing a reckless shot, which only put more pressure on the youngster. On top of that, Australia had posted a mammoth total of 474 runs in the first innings. Meanwhile, soon into his innings, Reddy lost his partner Ravindra Jadeja as the visitors were seven down for 221 runs in the first innings of the Boxing Day Test.

Reddy took charge of the situation and played some brilliant cricket to bail India out of the situation. The conditions favoured the batters and he took advantage of that and completed his century in 170 balls. The 21-year-old was extremely smart in his approach, and he was wise to duck the majority of the short balls and didn’t fall prey to outside off-stump deliveries. He also rotated well in the middle, resulting in putting Australia on the back foot.

The Visakhapatnam-born cricketer was extremely disciplined in his approach and that helped him register his maiden Test century at the iconic Melbourne Cricket Ground. He has been one of India’s best batters in the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy but Reddy barely had support from the other end. In the ongoing game, Washington Sundar gave him the necessary support, which was extremely vital in helping him get to the three-figure mark.

The spin-bowling all-rounder tired the bowlers with his regressive batting and later on, completed his half-century. India were desperate in need of a partnership and they stitched one of 127 runs, to bail India out of trouble. It also helped the visitors avoid the follow-on, which looked difficult at one point.

Meanwhile, Nitish Reddy completed his century with a boundary from the long-on region. India were nine wickets down and Mohammed Siraj was put to the test for three balls but the pacer managed to survive that and in the next over, Reddy got the job done. His father in the stands was in tears while the all-rounder celebrated by kneeling down and placing his helmet on top of the bat and his other hand was pointed towards the sky.
