Delhi Capitals continued their winning momentum after swatting aside Royal Challengers Bangalore in a dominant display by their batters. Faf du Plessis' side were helpless against Phil Salt's carnage which saw the home side get over the line with more than three overs to spare, making it four wins in the last five matches for DC in IPL 2023.
Chasing an above par-total on a batting-friendly surface, the Delhi openers came out all guns blazing. While David Warner opened the floodgates for the home side with a couple of boundaries in the first over of the chase, his opening partner Phil Salt was on rampage mode against the RCB bowlers.
The duo ensured Delhi's best powerplay of the tournament, adding 60 runs for the first wicket in just 5.1 overs. Although Warner's stay at the crease was cut short by Josh Hazlewood after a brisk cameo, Salt continued his belligerence from the other end. He stitched another explosive stand with the incoming Mitchell Marsh, who blasted 26 runs off 17 deliveries.
Rilee Rossouw supported Salt with another ballistic cameo as the duo made a mockery of the target set by the visitors. However, Salt failed to get his side over the lines, departing after a swashbuckling knock of 87 runs off just 45 deliveries.
Half-centuries from Virat Kohli and Mahipal Lomror help RCB to a competitive score
Earlier in the match, it was the visiting Royal Challengers Bangalore skipper Faf du Plessis who won the toss and decided to bat first on a decent batting strip in Delhi. The visitors were off to a steady start in the first couple of overs but switched the scoring rate when RCB's star opening pair got their eyes in against the Delhi bowlers.
It was the RCB skipper who led from the front in his solid first wicket stand with Virat Kohli. The Orange Cap holder was dismissed by Mitchell Marsh in the 11th over of the match after an entertaining knock of 45 runs from 32 deliveries. It was a double whammy for the visitors as Glenn Maxwell departed for a golden duck on the very next delivery of the same over.
While former Indian skipper Virat Kohli dug deep from one end, young Indian batter Mahipal Lomror supported his senior partner with some breathtaking shots. Kohli's sedated half-century was overshadowed by the 23-year-old southpaw's maiden half-century of the tournament. He remained unbeaten at the crease with 54 runs to his name in just 29 deliveries, taking his side to a par total of 181 runs in their 20 overs.
