Rangpur Riders defeated Victoria by 56 runs to be crowned the inaugural Global Super League champion. They won two out of the four matches in the league stage and qualified for the final on Net Run Rate. Victoria, on the other hand, had a better season in the league stage, finishing at the top of the table. They also defeated Rangpur in their league clash but on the night of the final, the batting unit failed to deliver under pressure.
Batting first, Rangpur posted 178 runs in 20 overs. Openers Steven Taylor and Soumya Sarkar played brilliant cricket, stitching a partnership of 124 runs. They didn’t compromise on the strike rate as Taylor smashed 68 runs off 49 deliveries while Soumya hit an unbeaten 84 runs knockoff 54 deliveries. The other batters struggled to keep up with the same momentum but it wasn’t a problem for the team as the opening partnership made the difference.
The bowlers lived up to their potential as well. Joe Clarke managed to give Victoria a rapid start as they smashed 54 runs in the powerplay but it was a completely different show after that. Kamrul Islam sent Blake Macdonald back to the pavilion for 16 and soon after the powerplay, Harmeet Singh picked up the wicket of Sanjay Krishnamurthy. Jonathan Wells and Scott Edwards failed to make a mark as well, scoring only two and nine runs respectively.
Pressure was mounting as Victoria were reduced to 79/4 at one stage. Soon, Clarke was sent back to the pavilion for 42 runs. Captain Corey Anderson too struggled, having departed for three runs as Victoria were 87/6. Rangpur bowlers dominated the middle phase and picked up wickets consistency to push Victoria out of the contest. They were eventually bundled for 122 runs, resulting in a massive victory for Rangpur.
Meanwhile, Soumya was adjudged Player of the Match for his valuable knock and was also named the Player of the Series for scoring 188 runs in five innings and finishing as the leading run-scorer of the tournament.
