West Indies and India kicked off their two-match Test series on July 12 at Windsor Park in Dominica. The Indian side saw two debutants as youngsters Yashasvi Jaiswal and Ishan Kishan received their Test caps, while Alick Athazane made his debut for the Windies. The two sides named a strong playing XI and the proceedings began with West Indies winning the toss and opting to bat first.

The host got off to a decent start as openers Kraigg Braithwaite and Tagenarine Chanderpaul sailed through the first ten overs. But they soon received a major setback as Ravichandran Ashwin picked up two quick wickets and sent them both back to the pavilion. Raymon Reifer too failed to impress as Shardul Thakur dismissed him, and Jermaine Blackwood followed him soon as a brilliant catch by Mohammed Siraj saw Ravindra Jadeja claiming his first wicket.

After a batting collapse, Windies finished the first session with 68/4 on board. The start to the second session was dull as West Indies' middle order batteries struggled to get going and could not add up runs to the scoreboard. To add to their misery, Jadeja dismissed Joshua Da Silva in the 32nd over to scalp his second.

The sixth wicket partnership between Jason Holder and Alick Athanaze was crucial, as the duo added 41 runs off 108 deliveries. They stretched the second session and gave the Indian bowlers a tough time, but Siraj finally managed to get the breakthrough with Holder’s wicket, and West Indies’ batting unit then came tumbling down.

Ashwin was the pick of the bowlers, as he finished the innings with a five-wicket haul, his career’s 33rd, and also completed 700 wickets in international cricket. The senior all-rounder registered 5/60 in 24.3 overs and helped India bundle out the hosts for mere 150 runs in the first innings. Jadeja too was brilliant with the ball, as he registered 3/26 in 14 overs while bowling seven maidens, and maintaining an economy of 1.85.

Senior-pro and debutant set the tone for batters

A new batting pair walked out when India began their first innings with the bat, as young prodigy Jaiswal joined skipper Rohit on the field and faced the very first ball. It was Rohit who got the game going when he hit a couple of boundaries in the first few overs, and Jaiswal soon gained momentum as the duo set up a strong partnership.

With his batting prowess, Jaiswal proved the selectors’ and management’s decision right. India dominated on Day 1 of the Dominica Test as, after two sessions of brilliant bowling displays by the spinners, Rohit and Jaiswal dominated the third session with the bat, adding 80 runs in 23 overs. While Rohit stood at 30*(65), Jaiswal finished the day comfortably at 40*(73).
