The Ashes 2023 continued its breathtaking action on Day 2, as Australia resumed their innings on 14/0 with openers, David Warner and Usman Khawaja, at the crease. After failing to get his favourite wicket late on Day 1, Stuart Broad finally dismissed David Warner, as the batter edged the ball back onto his stumps early in the first session.
Broad further got the big fish as he dismissed Marnus Labuschagne for a golden duck sending the Edgbaston crowd into a frenzy. However, the best was yet to come for the spirited English side as captain Ben Stokes got rid of their nemesis Steve Smith trapping him in front of the stumps to give his side their third success before lunch.
Post Lunch, England tried their best to rattle Travis Head with their short-ball ploy, however, the southpaw fought his way through for a brilliant half-century. Head (50) along with Khawaja stabilized the Australian innings with their 81-run stand for the fourth wicket.
After their partnership, England once again managed to claw their way back into the game as Moeen Ali got the better of Head, who was looking to smack him over mid-wicket but ended up hitting it straight to the fielder. Cameron Green (38 off 68) walked in next and put on a 72-run stand with Khawaja for the fifth wicket.
Usman Khawaja and Alex Carey took Australia to stumps
Just when everything looked alright for Australia, Moeen Ali once again broke the threatening partnership by destroying Green’s stumps with a classic offspinner’s dismissal.
At the other end, Khwaja built on his innings and brought up his first Test hundred in England during the last session. The southpaw got good support from Alex Carey (52*) as the duo took their team to stumps without any more casualties with their unbeaten 91-run stand. Australia finished Day 2 on 311/5 with Khwaja (126*) and Carey at the crease.
Meanwhile, Twitter was abuzz with reactions on action-packed Day 2.
