Twitter Reactions: Rinku Singh's mind-boggling innings shell shocks Gujarat Titans in all-time classic
Gujarat Titans' winning streak came down crashing after Rinku Singh's unbelievable knock in a thrilling encounter.
Kolkata Knight Riders registered their second successive win of the tournament thanks to a logic-defying knock from Rinku Singh, who smashed five consecutive sixes in the last over of the match to defeat Gujarat Titans in an all-time classic. Gujarat's stand-in skipper Rashid Khan turned the match in his side's favour with a glorious hat-trick. However, Rinku Singh's miraculous innings sealed an unprecedented win for KKR in arguably one of the greatest last-over victories in IPL history.
Kolkata's chase was off to a wobbly start after the visitors lost star opening batter Rahmanullah Gurbaz and N Jagadeesan in quick succession in the powerplay. However, KKR's Impact Player, Venkatesh Iyer, took the attack to the Gujarat Titans' bowlers.
Iyer, who came into the match on the back of a couple of disappointing outings with the bat, spared no one during his breathtaking assault and found a valiant partner in his skipper Nitish Rana. The duo showed no mercy in their explosive 100-run stand of just 55 deliveries. They even took down Gujarat's stand-in skipper Rashid Khan, who is not an easy bowler to hit out of the park.
However, Rana departed just five runs short of a brisk half-century as the home side started clawing their way back into the match. But they had to deal with the well-set Iyer from the other end, who was threatening to chase down the target on his own. However, his sizzling knock came to an end in the 16th over of the chase as the match swung in the favour of the home side once again.
KKR fell further behind as the hard-hitting Andre Russell departed with just a solitary run to his name. The home side asserted their dominance in the match as Sunil Narine departed for a golden duck and KKR's chase came down crashing in the space of five odd deliveries when Rashid Khan claimed a glorious hat-trick to dismiss last match's hero Shardul Thakur.
The match seemed done and dusted after Rashid's decisive last over, but the game twisted for one final time when Rinku Singh smashed Yash Dayal for five consecutive sixes in the final over of the match to hand KKR the victory from absolutely nowhere.
Vijay Shankar's blitz propels GT to a daunting total
Earlier, a Hardik Pandya-less Gujarat Titans opted to bat first on a flat surface in Ahmedabad. The home side got off to a decent start as Shubman Gill looked back to his best after a low score in the previous outing. Sai Sudharsan, who played a match-winning knock in the last game, registered a second successive half-century to lay a strong foundation for his side.
However, it was Vijay Shankar who stole the show with a mind-boggling innings in the latter stages of the first innings. The experienced Indian all-rounder smashed 63 runs off just 24 deliveries, dispatching the KKR bowlers to all parts of the ground, to take his side to a daunting total of 204 runs in their allocated 20 overs.
