Australia and India clashed in Match 51 of the T20 World Cup 2024 at Gros Islet, St Lucia on Monday, June 24. Australia won the toss and elected to field first. They made one change, bringing in Mitchell Starc in place of Ashton Agar while India remained unchanged.

Virat Kohli, again, had a terrible outing after a couple of decent scores. He was out for a duck while pulling Hazlewood towards deep midwicket. However, the Aussies did not know what would hit them next. Rohit Sharma went on a rampage, hitting nearly all the Australian bowlers to the fence. He took a liking for Mitchell Starc, scoring 29 runs off one of his overs. Rishabh Pant supported Rohit but was eventually out for 15 off 14 balls.

Rohit was looking good for a hundred but was bowled by Starc on 92(41), an innings which included seven fours and eight sixes. Thereafter, cameos from Suryakumar Yadav (31 off 16), Shivam Dube (28 off 22), and Hardik Pandya (27* off 17) took India to 205/5 in 20 overs, a score which looked formidable for the Aussies considering the significance of the match.

However, apart from the early hiccup in the form of David Warner's wicket, the Aussies were looking determined to chase down the target. An 81-run partnership for the second wicket between Travis Head (76 off 43) and Mitchell Marsh (37 off 28) set the stage for a close finish. But a brilliant catch in the deep by Axar Patel of Marsh stemmed the momentum and Australia lost wickets regularly subsequently.

When Head fell in the 17th over the target seemed distant, and despite the best efforts from Tim David and Pat Cummins, Australia succumbed to a 24-run defeat. Arshdeep was the pick of the bowlers, taking 3/37.
