India took on England in the third Test of their ongoing five-game series at the Niranjan Shah Stadium in Rajkot on February 15. With the series levelled, both sides have it all to play for in Rajkot, and the clash began with the hosts coming in to bat first after winning the toss.
At the start of the clash, much to the fans’ delight, Indian skipper Rohit Sharma smashed his 11th Test century. India got off to a rocky start to the game as England’s bowling attack had the Indian top-order on its knees.
Yashasvi Jaiswal was dismissed for just ten runs, with Shubman Gill falling prey to Mark Wood for a duck. Furthermore, Rajat Patidar was sent back to the pavilion after scoring just five runs as well.
However, after the shaky start, Rohit’s knock came through like a blessing for the hosts. It is interesting to note that the skipper was given a lifeline early in his innings when Joe Root dropped his catch on the first slip when he was on 27 runs.
Furthermore, Rohit strengthened his partnership with all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja in the second session of the third Test. He completed his ton in 157 deliveries in the third session, with 11 fours and two sixes to his name.
Rohit Sharma breaks several records with the 11th Test century
During his century, Rohit Sharma broke several records. The veteran opener became the leading century-maker among all openers in the World Test Championship across three cycles since 2019.
Furthermore, Rohit also went past former skipper MS Dhoni to become India’s second-highest six-hitter in Test cricket, with only former batter Virender Sehwag (91) being ahead of Rohit.
He also became India’s fourth-highest run run-scorer in international cricket, surpassing Sourav Ganguly. His ton put the Indian team in a comfortable position on Day 1 of the first Test.
Here’s how X reacted to Rohit Sharma’s ton:
The way he's batting it feels like he's been batting here for ages. That's Rohit Sharma for you!
