Twitter Reactions: Ryan Burl's five-wicket haul gives Zimbabwe historic win on Australian soil
Australia secured the three-match ODI series 2-1.
Zimbabwe scripted a historic victory against the mighty Australian side in their own backyard to avoid a whitewash. This is the first-ever victory for the Zimbabwe side on Australian soil. Skipper Chakabva played a responsible innings to take his to a memorable victory at the Tony Ireland Stadium in Townsville.
Earlier in the game, Zimbabwe opted to bowl first after winning the toss and the hosts were into early trouble with the loss of skipper Aaron Finch and Steve Smith. Alex Carey and Marcus Stoinis tried to take their time, however, Brad Evans managed to get the duo, while Cameron Green was dismissed for only 3. David Warner was the only batter who got going as he reached his half-century.
Ryan Burn turns the fortunes with a fifer
Warner and Glenn Maxwell (19) stitched a crucial partnership of 57 for the sixth wicket, however, once Maxwell was dismissed, the lower-order did not stick around for too long. Ryan Burl cleaned up the tail and his five-wicket haul meant that Australia were bundled up for 141 in just 31 overs. Warner was unfortunate to miss out on a century by six runs, but he did the bulk of the scoring for his team as Burl finished with 5 for 10 in his three overs.
In reply, Zimbabwe started off quite well with the openers Takudzwanashe Kaitano and Tadiwanashe Marumani showing good intent at the crease. The opening pair added 38 for the first wicket and eased some pressure, but Josh Hazlewood picked up three wickets in a quick span to put Zimbabwe on the back foot briefly.
However, Marumani’s 35 at the top proved to be a vital knock and he got good support from his skipper Regis Chakabva who remained unbeaten on 37. Munyonga and Burl’s handy runs down the order ensured that the visitors got over the line with three wickets in hand and 11 overs to spare to secure a historic win.
