Contrary to the first game of the series, South Africa opted to bat first. With Tony de Zorzi out with a thigh strain, Ryan Rickelton was pushed up the order. An inside edge saved Aiden Markram from going back to the shed the very first delivery of the game. Mir Hamza, who came in for Naseem Shah, was dispatched for a few boundaries in a short first spell which lasted only for three overs.

The first wicket of the day was that of Markram. After a rather flat hour for Pakistan, Khurram Shahzad found the edge which was terrifically grabbed by Mohammad Rizwan. This was the second innings in a row that Wiaan Mulder was promoted up the order - the first one being against Sri Lanka in November. However, his stay did not have much impact on the scoreboard. Tristan Stubbs was dismissed for a six-ball duck on the the fifth delivery of the last over before Lunch.

Temba Bavuma brought up the team 100 with his fourth boundary of the innings. The Rickelton-Bavuma duo steadily compiled their innings and their counter-attack was contrasting to the way they played in the first session. It was the 46th over in which Rickelton finally brought up his second Test ton. A wave of elation could be seen being radiated from the home dressing room. It was a moment to cherish for everyone in the ground. Tears of joy could be seen in his mother's eyes.

The second session clearly belonged to South Africa, as they put on 112 runs without losing a wicket. Bavuma brought up his half-century in the closing moments before Tea was called. Bavuma struck the first maximum of the match in the 55th over. Aamer Jamal's 12th over was slapped for 14 runs. The next time he got back to bowl, Bavuma was two short of his century. Salman Agha dismissed Bavuma for a spellbinding 106, as the Proteas ended the day on 316/4 after 80 overs.
