India came out on top by a six-wicket margin with 21 deliveries to spare in Match 2 of the ongoing edition of the Champions Trophy at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium. This was India's second win against the opposition in the marquee ODI tournament after their triumph in the semi-final in 2017.
The opening duo of Mohammed Shami and Harshit Rana were right on the money first-up, dismissing Soumya Sarkar and skipper Najmul Hossain Shanto, respectively, in the first two overs of the game. Then Axar Patel struck twice in his first over with wickets off consecutive deliveries to leave Bangladesh reeling. A routine grab grassed by the Indian skipper denied Axar his first hattrick across all forms of international cricket.
Bangladesh were in dire straits at 39/5 after 10 overs. However, it was from that juncture that Towhid Hridoy and Jaker Ali steered the flow of play. Only three boundaries were scored in the next 15 overs. However, the two had successfully managed to navigate their side to calmer waters. Jaker and Hridoy brought up their respective half-centuries in consecutive overs, as the century of the partnership was brought up around the same period.
The 154-run stand, Bangladesh's highest for the sixth wicket, was broken by Mohammed Shami in the 43rd over. In doing so, Shami became the quickest to reach to 200 ODI wickets in terms of balls bowled (5126 as compared to Mitchell Starc's 5240).
The 45th over of the game was dispatched for 20 runs. Hridoy's memorable moment came in the penultimate over of the innings. Battling endurance-sapping cramps, the 24-year-old went on to register his maiden international ton off 114 deliveries. Shami proceeded to claim his sixth five-wicket haul in ODIs, which was also his fifth in ICC events. Bangladesh ended up getting bowled out for 228 in 49.4 overs.

The run-chase was off to a commanding start with Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill taking the charge to the Bangladeshi pacers. By the end of the ninth over, Rohit had marched on to 37 off 31 deliveries. In the process, he became the second-fastest cricketer in terms of innings (261) to get to the 11,000-run mark in ODIs. However, Rohit was dismissed on the penultimate delivery of the 10th over, holing out to cover point. A drag down the on-side resulted in Virat Kohli's first boundary off the 35th delivery of his innings. However, the second wicket of India's innings fell in the subsequent over.
Rishad Hossain, who earlier played a 12-ball 18-run cameo, got rid of the ace batter as Kohli's struggles against leg-spinners continued as he sliced straight to backward point. Five overs later, Mustafizur Rahman sent Shreyas Iyer back to the pavilion in the 28th over. With Rishad dismissing Axar on the first delivery of the 31st over, it seemed as if the final phase of the pursuit would be challenging for the Indians.
But Jaker Ali provided KL Rahul a reprieve in the deep a few overs later. In fact, that was the only opportunity which Gill and Rahul presented to the opposition. Gill reached his ton in 125 deliveries, the slowest by an Indian batter in ODIs since the 2019 ODI World Cup. Soon after that, Rahul finished off the game in style with a maximum into the stands over the deep backward square-leg.
