Team India’s winning juggernaut continued in the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 as they beat New Zealand by four wickets on Sunday, October 22 at Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association Stadium, Dharamsala. After being put in to bat first, New Zealand got all out for 273 in their allotted 50 overs with Dary Mitchell top-scoring with a century. In reply, India chased down the target in 48 overs courtesy of another Virat Kohli’s chase masterclass.

India once again started their chase in emphatic fashion as openers Rohit Sharma (46 off 40) and Shubman Gill (26 off 31) added 71 runs for the first wicket off 67 balls. However, following their dismissals, India lost their way in the middle as they were restricted to 191/5 after 33.5 overs.

While wickets fell from one end, Virat Kohli (95 off 104) continued to keep the scoreboard moving and brought his side on the brink of victory. Ravindra Jadeja (39* off 44) finished things off for India helping them register their fifth consecutive win in the tournament and go to the top of the points table. Notably, it was also the first win for India over the Kiwis in ICC tournaments since the 2003 ODI World Cup.

Earlier in the day, after being put in to bat first, New Zealand got off to a miserable start as they lost their openers Devon Conway (0 off 9) and Will Young (17 off 27) with just 19 runs on the board after 8.1 overs. Seeing their team in trouble, Rachin Ravindra (75 off 87) and Daryl Mitchell (130 off 127) put on a massive 159-run stand for the third wicket off 152 balls.

Mohammed Shami picked third fifer in ODIs

Mohammed Shami brought India back into the game by dismissing Ravindra in the 34th over while Kuldeep Yadav got the prized scalps of captain Tom Latham (5 off 7) and Glenn Phillips (23 off 26) to leave the Kiwis on 243/5 after 44.2 overs. A brilliant spell in the death overs by Mohammed Shami (5/54, ten overs) restricted New Zealand to 273 in their allotted 50 overs.
