Twitter Reactions: Shubman Gill, middle-order put India 1-0 up over England in Nagpur
Although England scored 77 in their first 10 overs, they lost three wickets as well.
England won the toss in the first ODI of the three-match series and opted to bat first. The two openers started off quite positively. The sixth over of the innings, ODI debutant Harshit Rana's third, was plundered for 26 runs as England' tally doubled from 26 to 52. Harshit came back superbly well to pick up his first couple of wickets in the format the next time he was brought onto bowl within the powerplay.
Ravindra Jadeja fired one through to get the better of Joe Root. Root, who was playing his first ODI since November 2023, could assemble only 19 runs before getting trapped in front. By the end of the 25th over, Jadeja had bowled six overs on the trot. England were placed decently at a score of 138 for the loss of four wickets.
Skipper, Jos Buttler, continued his good run in the ongoing white-ball series. He brought up his first half-century after 17 ODI innings on Indian soil. Despite being undone by an Axar Patel delivery shortly after, his partner, Jacob Bethell, carried on with his knock. The 21-year-old brought up his second ODI half-century on the final delivery of the final over. England ended up getting skittled out for 248 at the end of 47.4 overs.
Jofra Archer was right on the money in his first three overs. Yashasvi Jaiswal could register only 15 runs on his ODI debut before he was cut into half with a beautiful delivery from Archer. With Rohit Sharma departing in the following over, India seemed to be in a spot of bother. However, Shreyas Iyer tore into Archer and then Brydon Carse to race to a 30-ball fifty. Jacob Bethell was greeted with a couple of boundaries. Nonetheless, it was Bethell who had the last laugh by making him head back.

To keep the left-right combination going, Axar Patel was sent in at No.5. Just nine deliveries into his innings, he had already struck a four and a six. The 25th over of the run-chase was when Shubman Gill notched up his first ODI fifty against England. A 17-run over by Carse brought India closer to their target. An over after Axar registered his third ODI half-century was when he was bowled through the gate with a deliciously flighted delivery by Rashid. KL Rahul did not contribute much to the scoreboard. He was dismissed for just two.
Gill fell 13 runs shy of his century, double-batting one to Buttler at mid-on. A couple of boundaries by Jadeja off Saqib Mahmood helped India to a four-wicket triumph with 68 deliveries to spare. Apart from the wily leg-spin of Rashid, none of the other English bowlers looked incisive enough to trouble the Indians. This was India's fifth win of the white-ball series.
