Gujarat Titans recorded a huge 55-run win over inconsistent Mumbai Indians in the 35th match of the Indian Premier League 2023 (IPL) on Tuesday, April 25. Shubman Gill, David Miller, and Abhinav Manohar shone with the bat to help Gujarat post a total of 207/6 while batting first. Then, spinners Rashid Khan and Noor Ahmad impressed with the ball to limit Mumbai Indians to just 152/9 during the chase.
A win boosted Gujarat Titans to the second place in the points table, on level with topper Chennai Super Kings, while Mumbai Indians struggle in the seventh position with just six points after seven matches. Rohit Sharma won the toss for Mumbai Indians and elected to bowl first at Ahmedabad's Narendra Modi Stadium. The hosts remained unchanged while Riley Meredith and Kumar Kartikeya replaced Jofra Archer and Hrtihik Shokeen respectively for the traveling side.
Arjun Tendulkar gave Mumbai a promising start with Wriddhiman Saha's wicket in the third over. But Gill and Hardik Pandya added quick 38 runs for the second wicket to thwart off early pressure. Piyush Chawla dismissed Hardik in the seventh over to earn his 11th wicket of this season. But Gill produced his third half-century of this season to ensure a big total for Gujarat.
Gill top-scored with 56 off 34 with the help of seven fours and a six and added 41 runs for the third wicket with Vijay Shankar. Kartikeya picked Gill's wicket in the 12th over in his first appearance in IPL 2023 while Chawla dismissed Shankar in the next over as Mumbai made a good comeback in the middle overs.
But Miller and Manohar registered a 71-run stand for the fifth wicket in just 37 balls to keep Gujarat Titans on track for a big total. Miller smashed 46 off just 22 and Manohar quickfired with a 21-ball 42 as Gujarat posted a total of 207/6. Chawla picked two wickets for 34 while Cameron Green conceded 39 runs off his two-over spell.
While chasing another big total, Mumbai Indians lost Rohit in the second over who scored just two runs after facing eight deliveries. Ishan Kishan and Green added 39 runs for the second wicket with the latter taking charge with an aggressive approach. Kishan's inconsistency continued as he walked off the pitch after scoring just 13 off 21.
Rashid Khan put Gujarat Titans in the driving seat with Ishan and Tilak Varma's big wickets in the eight over. Green smashed 33 off 26 with the help of three sixes as he seemed in the mood for another big knock. Noor Ahmad killed Mumbai's hope for a succesfull chase with Green's wicket in the 11th over and dismissed Tim David after two deliveries.
Nehal Wadhera played a brave knock of 40 off 21 but he didn't get much support as Mumbai Indians played out the remaining overs to avoid losing all wickets. Mohit Sharma picked up two wickets in the death overs as Mumbai Indians scored 152/9 in 20 overs to suffer back-to-back defeats. Noor took three wickets while Rashid made a big impact with two for 27 for the reigning champions.
