The first two days of the ongoing fourth Test match between India and Australia were dominated by the visiting batters, and it was the turn of the Indians to assert their dominance with the bat on the third day in Ahmedabad. Shubman Gill's glittering first century on Indian soil was the highlight of a frustrating day for the Aussies.
India started the day strongly after Shubman Gill and Rohit Sharma scored freely against the Australian pacers in the opening hour. However, the Aussies found a way back into the contest after the Indian skipper fell against the run of play. Following Rohit's dismissal, the tourists applied pressure on the duo of Gill and Cheteshwar Pujara by stifling the flow of runs.
But the pair continued on their merry way, grinding runs against a disciplined Australian bowling unit. Gill, who was drafted into the team in the last Test match in place of the under-fire KL Rahul, registered his second Test ton for India, his first on his home soil. His century meant that he joined an elite list of players to have registered a ton across all formats in a calendar year.
India end the day on a high after Virat Kohli's half-century
While the crowd were still celebrating the young Indian dasher's milestone, Pujara, who was at his impregnable best, departed after missing a straight delivery from Todd Murphy. His dismissal brought in Indian batting superstar Virat Kohli to the crease to a huge ovation from a vociferous crowd at the Narendra Modi Stadium.
Kohli's arrival amplified the scoring rate for the home side as both batters milked runs against a tired-looking Australian attack. But the young Indian opener succumbed to a persistent Nathan Lyon to hand Australia their third wicket of the day. However, the former Indian skipper stood tall from the other end, registering his first Test fifty in 16 innings to end a solid day for the hosts.
The former Indian skipper is looking well set at the crease and will be eyeing to end his century drought in the longest format of the game when play resumes on the fourth day. He has received valiant support from star all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja from the other end.
