Both Australian and Indian pacers had a phenomenal Day 1 in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT 2024-25) opener, being played at the Optus Stadium, in Perth. In the absence of Rohit Sharma, Jasprit Bumrah led the Indian team and after winning the toss, the pacer elected to bat first. He explained that the surface might initially support the batters but that wasn’t the case.

Team India lost back-to-back wickets early on as Yashasvi Jaiswal and Devdutt Padikkal failed to open their tally. Star batter Virat Kohli departed for five runs. Rishabh Pant and KL Rahul took control of the ship but the latter departed for 26 runs in a controversial manner. Dhruv Jurel and Washington Sundar failed to make a mark and the onus fell on Pant and Nitish Kumar Reddy and they built a 48-run partnership.

Pant departed for 37 runs while Reddy had little support from the other end but yet added 41 valuable runs as India made 150 runs in the first innings. Ace pacer Josh Hazlewood troubled the Indian batters, picking up a four-wicket haul, while Pat Cummins, Mitchell Marsh and Mitchell Starc picked two wickets each.

Indian pacers, particularly Jasprit Bumrah ripped Australian batters in the second innings. He dismissed Nathan McSweeney in the third over and later, picked up the wickets of Usman Khawaja and Steve Smith - the latter departed for a golden duck for only the second time in his career. After Bumrah’s wrath, debutant Harshit Rana sent Travis Head packing with an absolute peach.

Later, Mohammed Siraj picked up two quick wickets of Mitchell Marsh and Marnus Labuschagne and with that, Australia were completely on their back foot on their home turf. Indian pacers were too hot to handle for the Australian batters, as they didn’t look comfortable at any given time. Towards the fag end, Bumrah picked up the wicket of Pat Cummins and Australia posted 67/7 after Day 1, trailing by 87 runs. Bumrah’s four-fer was the highlight of the day as Team India would hope to keep up with the momentum on Day 2.
