Playing at home, in spin-friendly conditions, Bangladesh were expected to bounce back in the second Test against South Africa at Zahur Ahmed Chowdhary Stadium in Chattogram. However, their batting unit failed tremendously, as the hosts lost the game by an innings and 273 runs. The Proteas were in total control of the game, from the beginning and eventually got the job done and won the series rather comfortably.

Batting first, the Aiden Markram-led side posted a massive total of 575 runs. Opener Tony de Zorzi made 177 runs, while Tristan Stubbs hit 106 runs. Batting at number seven, Wiian Mulder hit a century as well, scoring an unbeaten 105 runs while number eight, Senuran Muthusamy made 68 off 75 balls.

Bangladesh, on the other hand, looked like they were batting on a different surface. Mominul Haque made 82 runs as Bangladesh were bundled for only 159 runs. Eight of their batters scored in single digits, which was highly concerning, especially given that the visitors didn’t find much difficulty to bat on. Meanwhile, Kagiso Rabada starred with the ball for South Africa, picking up a five-wicket haul.

The hosts were imposed follow-on and they struggled more in the second innings. This time, Bangladesh got bundled for 143 runs. None of the batters could get going, resulting in an embarrassing defeat at home. Najmul Shanto, who reportedly played his final Test as captain, made 36 runs, while Hasan Mahmud played an unbeaten knock of 38 runs.

For South Africa, Keshav Maharaj stole the show with his five-wicket haul. Muthuswamy too bowled brilliantly, picking up four wickets and getting the job done for the Proteas. They would be delighted with the performance, especially as South Africa’s track record in spin-friendly conditions isn’t very good. With the win, they have sealed the series 2-0 and will next play India in a four-match T20I series, starting November 8.
