Netherlands stunned South Africa in Match 15 of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 as they beat them by 38 runs on Tuesday, October 17 at the Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association Stadium, Dharamsala. The Proteas failed to chase down the target of 246 in the rain-curtailed 43-over match and were bundled out for 207 in 42.5 overs.

South Africa’s chase didn’t get off to a great start as they lost in-form opener Quinton de Kock (20 off 22) in the eighth over. Captain Temba Bavuma (16 off 31) also departed seven balls later as he lost his stumps against Roelof van der Merwe. Paul van Meekeren got the prized scalp of Aiden Markram (1 off 3) while Van der Merwe further dismissed Rassie van der Dussen (4 off 7) to leave South Africa reeling at 44/4 after 11.2 overs.

Logan van Beek also got into action and got rid of in-form Heinrich Klaasen (28 off 38) in the 19th over to leave South Africa reeling on 89/5. David Miller (43 off 52) tried his best to take his team home but he also lost his stumps against Van Beek leaving South Africa staring down the barrel.

Earlier in the day, Netherlands also didn’t get off to a great start as openers Vikramjit Singh (2 off 16) and Max O'Dowd (18 off 25) departed cheaply leaving their side on 24/2 after 7.1 overs. Bas de Leede (2 off 7) and Colin Ackerman (12 off 25) also failed to leave a mark as the Dutch were left reeling at 50/4 after 15.1 overs.

Captain Scott Edwards shone with the bat for the Dutch

With wickets falling at the other end, captain Scott Edwards held one end and played a magnificent innings of 78* off 69 balls, smashing ten fours and a six in his innings. He also got good support from Roelof van der Merwe (29 off 19) and Aryan Dutt (23* off 9) who helped their side post the total of 245/8 in the rain-curtailed 43-over game. As a result, the Netherlands managed to beat a Test playing nation for the first time in their ODI World Cup history. It was just their third win in ODI World Cup as they had earlier beaten Namibia in 2003 and Scotland in 2007.
