England took on South Africa in Match 45 of the T20 World Cup 2024 at the Daren Sammy Stadium in St Lucia on June 21. England won the toss and opted to bowl first. South Africa were off to a great start as Reeza Hendricks and Quinton de Kock put up an 86-run stand for the first wicket. De Kock departed after scoring 65 off 38 and the Proteas saw di in their run rate. On the back of David Miller's 43 runs off 28 balls, South Africa posted a decent 163 for 6 on the board.
While chasing, England managed just 61 runs in 10 overs, losing Phil Salt, Johny Bairstow, Jos Buttler, and Moeen Ali with no batter crossing the 20-run mark. England found respite in Harry Brook and Liam Livingstone as they scored 53 and 33 respectively. When England needed 14 runs off the final over, Anrich Nortje picked Brook and contained Sam Curran as he conceded just six runs and South Africa won the game by seven runs.
It's completely a different surface compared to the night games: De Kock
De Kock turned out to be the differentiator in the game as Hendricks contributed only 19 runs in their 86 runs-opening partnership. He was all over Jofra Archer and hit him for two consecutive sixes and a boundary in the fourth over to set the tone. As a result, South Africa scored 61 runs in the powerplay against 41 of England which was a huge difference in the context of the game.
“It (the pitch) definitely doesn't play the same as night games. It's completely a different surface compared to the night games. There was a little bit of extra bounce early on. I try to carry on confidence game by game. We bowled really well in the powerplay, and we controlled it very nicely. To be able to defend 160 on a decent wicket is a good effort from us,” said De Kock after receiving player of the Match award.

England talks about sportsmanship, gentleman’s game play fair and all but just now Wood claimed a catch which he knew wasn’t a clean catch. Embarrassing. #ENGvsSA pic.twitter.com/aMSyClvylM

SA : we need someone in the middle order to absorb the collapse but also to score runs at a good pace. That too consistently.
