Twitter Reactions: South Africa reign supreme in Delhi runfest despite Sri Lanka's valiant effort

South Africa beat Sri Lanka by 102 runs and began their World Cup campaign on a winning note.

South Africa got their ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 campaign off to a winning start as they crushed Sri Lanka by 102 runs on Saturday, October 07 at Arun Jaitley Stadium, Delhi. After being put in to bat first, the Temba Bavuma-led side posted the highest score ever in the World Cup history of 428/5 in their allotted 50 overs. Quinton de Kock (100 off 84), Rassie van der Dussen (108 off 110) and Aiden Markram (106 off 54) scored centuries for the Proteas.

In reply, Sri Lanka lost their opener Pathum Nissanka (0 off 3) early in the chase with just one run on the board. However, Kusal Mendis was in no mood to surrender in front of South Africa as he played a breathtaking innings of 76 (42) to keep his side in the game. Following his dismissal, Charith Asalanka took the innings forward with his knock of 79 (65) and helped his side cross the 230-run mark in the 32nd over.

Captain Dasun Shanaka also showed great fight lower down the order with his innings of 68 (62), however, it was too big a mountain to climb for Sri Lanka. As a result, they were bundled out for 326 in 44.5 overs with Gerald Coetzee starring with the ball as he registered figures of 3/68 in nine overs. Marco Jansen (2/92), Kagiso Rabada (2/50, 7.5 overs) and Keshav Maharaj (2/62, 10 overs) also picked up two wickets each.

Aiden Markram becomes fastest centurion in World Cup history

Earlier in the day, Aiden Markram etched his name in the record books as he became the fastest centurion in World Cup history reaching the landmark in just 49 balls. He went on to score 106 off 54 balls smashing 14 fours and three sixes in his innings.

Meanwhile, South Africa have climbed to the second spot on the ODI World Cup 2023 points table with a net run rate of +2.040. They will next face Australia on October 12 in Lucknow. On the other hand, Sri Lanka will next lock horns with Pakistan on October 10 in Hyderabad.
