Twitter Reactions: Spirited England crush India by 38 runs in Mumbai to go 1-0 up in T20I series

England women beat India women by 38 runs in the first T20I of the three-match series on Wednesday, December 06 at Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.

England began the three-match T20I series against India on a winning note, as they beat the hosts by 38 runs in the first T20I on Wednesday, December 06 at Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai. After being put in to bat first, England posted a mammoth total of 197/6 in their allotted 20 overs. In reply, India could only score 159/6 in the second innings and lost the game.

The Indian chase didn’t get off to a good start as they lost their opener Smriti Mandhana (6 off 7) in the third over with 20 runs on the board. Jemimah Rodrigues (4 off 8), who walked in at number three, also departed cheaply leaving India on 41/2.

Captain Harmanpreet Kaur (26 off 21) tried to put on a partnership with Shafali and the duo added 41 runs for the third wicket off 62 balls. However, captain Harmanpreet got dismissed trying to up the ante while Richa Ghosh (21 off 16) also couldn’t continue her knock for long.

Meanwhile, Shafali (52 off 42) continued her innings from the other end and completed her half-century. However, even she failed to keep up with the required run rate and was dismissed by Sophie Ecclestone (3/15) who finished as the pick of the bowlers for England.

Earlier in the day, Renuka Singh (3/27, 4 overs) got India off to a terrific start by dismissing Sophie Dunkley (1 off 2) and Alice Capsey (0 off 1) in the first over itself. Seeing their team in trouble, Danielle Wyatt (75 off 47) and Nat Sciver-Brunt (77 off 53) forged a massive 138-run stand off 86 balls to bring their team into a commanding position.

A brilliant cameo from Amy Jones of 23 off 9 balls where she smacked three fours and a six, helped her side England post a massive total of 197/6 in their allotted 20 overs. Nat Sciver Brunt was awarded Player of the Match for her brilliant innings of 77 off 53.

Courtesy of their win, England took a 1-0 lead in the three-match series and will next take on India in the second T20I on Saturday, December 09 at the same venue.
