India finished with 191 for 6 in their 20 overs, thanks to Suryakumar Yadav who played a blinder of a knock and brought up another remarkable century in T20Is. New Zealand's bowling attack did not have much answers to Suryakumar's brilliance while Tim Southee picked up his second hattrick in the format despite the runs flowing at a high rate.
Earlier in the game, New Zealand opted to bowl first after winning the toss and it was the new opening combination of Rishabh Pant and Ishan Kishan coming out to the middle for India. Kishan struck a few boundaries up front, while Pant perished after a loose stroke for 6 off 13 balls. Kishan and Suryakumar kept the scoreboard ticking with attractive shots while rain came down pouring in the seventh over.
Suryakumar steals the spotlight with another century
Kishan’s cameo came to an end in the tenth over after he was removed for a 31-ball 36 with a beautiful delivery from Ish Sodhi. Shreyas Iyer came out to bat and straightaway showed positive intent by taking on the spinner in the very first ball. Suryakumar got into his groove at the other end and the in-form batter looked in great touch yet again.
Iyer’s innings came to an end in an unfortunate manner as he got closer to the stumps while going on the backfoot and bails lightened up. Suryakumar, however, kept going and went past the 50-run mark as skipper Hardik Pandya joined him at the crease. The pair went hard after the bowling to keep the momentum going and Suryakumar in particular kept clearing the boundaries at ease.
The runs came at a fair clip for Suryakumar as he brought up his second T20I century to sum up an incredible year for him. The 19th over proved to be massive for India with Suryakumar hitting boundaries continuously and found the gaps consistently. In the final over, he did not have the strike completely as Southee picked up a hattrick, his second of the career, and cut down the runs considerably.
