Courtesy of invaluable knocks by Tammy Beaumont and the England Women's skipper, Heather Knight, the hosts posted 218 runs on Day 2 of the Women’s Ashes. During the first innings, Australia attained a humongous total of 473 runs, courtesy of Annabel Sutherland's maiden Test ton.
After scoring 328 runs at the close of Day 1, Sutherland, who was batting with an unbeaten score of 39, kept her side steady with an impressive knock. The all-rounder combined to raise a 77-run partnership with Ashleigh Gardner and further slammed her fifty off 100 balls.
Meanwhile, Gardner departed for 40 runs after she holed out to keeper Amy Jones, courtesy of a terrific inswinger by Lauren Bell. With England unable to make the in-roads in getting the breakthroughs at regular intervals, Sutherland took the onus of getting the vital runs and shifted gears which helped her get the next fifty runs in just 48 deliveries.
In the process, she slammed her maiden ton and became the youngest centurion in the history of Women's Ashes. Alana King and Alana King got 21 and 22 runs, respectively before heading back to the pavilion. Sutherland, who was at her best with the bat, notched up a well-built 137* off 184 balls thereby helping her side attain a humongous score of 473 runs in the first innings.
Sophie Ecclestone recorded a five-wicket haul, whereas Lauren Filer and Lauren Bell picked two wickets apiece. In reply to the total posted, the Aussies extended their domination in the form of an early scalp of Emma Lamb for a mere 10 runs to leave England reeling quite early in the contest.
However, it was Beaumont and skipper Knight’s partnership that got the derailed side back on track. The pair added 115 runs off 185 balls, which kept England in a steady spot during the chase. Knight registered 57 off 91 balls before her innings came to a conclusion by Ashleigh Gardner.
Beaumont carved out a masterclass as she cracked an unbeaten 100 off 152 balls to keep England on the hunt.
