The second Test match between hosts Bangladesh and India saw the visitors seize the early momentum on the opening day after bundling out the hosts for a paltry 227 runs in their first innings. Umesh Yadav and Ravichandran Ashwin did the business with the ball, scalping four wickets each. The Indian batters managed to negotiate eight overs late in the day, with both openers returning home unscathed.

The day started with the hosts winning the toss and batting first on a surprisingly green top at the Shere Bangla National Stadium. Bangladesh made a decent start to the game as their openers batted diligently in the first hour of the game. However, their early promise was undone after a vicious delivery from the returning Jaydev Unadkat got the better of Zakir Hasan.

India struck another blow as Najmul Shanto followed his opening partner back to the dressing room in the very next over. Bangladeshi skipper Shakib Al Hasan steadied the ship for the hosts with a handy partnership with Mominul Haque. However, he fell to a poor shot on the very first delivery after the lunch break, handing India the upper hand on the opening day.

Mushfiqur Rahim and Litton Das, both got decent starts but failed to convert them as Mominul seemed to be running out of partners from the other end. His partnership with the mercurial all-rounder Mehidy Hasan Miraz frustrated the Indians, but the post-tea session saw the visitors take a firm grip on the proceedings on the first day in Dhaka.

Umesh Yadav and veteran offie Ravichandran Ashwin grabbed four wickets a piece to halt the Bangladeshi innings to a below-par total of 227 runs. Jaydev Unadkat, whose selection in the team ahead of Kuldeep Yadav raised a few eyebrows, made a brilliant comeback to Test cricket after a hiatus of 12 long years. He opened the floodgates for India with his maiden Test wicket and was unlucky not to pick more than his tally of two wickets in the first innings.
