India Maharajas pulled off a memorable win over World Giants in the special exhibition match of the Legends League Cricket 2022 tournament on Friday, September 16. World Giants put a big target of 171-run while batting first with Irish star Kevin O'Brien scoring the highest 52 runs off just 31 balls. The Indian all-rounder Yusuf Pathan smashed unbeaten 50 runs off 35 balls to guide India Maharajas to a victory with six wickets and eight balls remaining.
O'Brien and Hamilton Masakadza started well for World Giants with a crucial 50-run partnership for the first wicket. Pankaj Singh gave India their first breakthrough with the wicket of Masakadza who scored 18 runs off 15 balls. World Giants skipper Jacques Kallis joined O'Brien and formed another good partnership for the second wicket. O'Brien smashed 52 runs off just 31 balls before getting caught out on Joginder Sharma's delivery in the tenth over.
Indian captain Harbhajan Singh bowled out Kallis in the next over to get his team back into the game. But West Indies wicketkeeper Denesh Ramdin and Sri Lankan all-rounder Thisara Perera dominated middle overs with a 42-run partnership for the fourth wicket. Mohammed Kaif broke the partnership by getting Perera's wicket in the 16th over. Pankaj took three wickets in the last over to restrict World Giants on 170/8 in 20 overs. Pankaj ended his spell with five wickets while conceding only 26 runs in his four overs. Sreesanth proved costly with 46 runs for no wicket in three overs for India.
Yusuf Pathan and Irfan Pathan go ballistic
India Maharajas lost their star opener Virender Sehwag to the innings' fifth ball itself. He scored only four runs off five balls and got caught out on Fidel Edwards' delivery. Wicketkeeper-batter Parthiv Patel started well with two fours and a six but also departed in the fifth over on Tim Bresnan's delivery. Bresnan also dismissed Kaif early and Maharajas were struggling on 50/3 at the end of the seventh over.
Then, Tanmay Srivastava and Yusuf controlled the game with a big 103-run partnership for the fourth wicket. Tanmay scored 54 runs off just 39 balls before getting out on Bresnan's first delivery of the 18th over. But the next batter Irfan Pathan smashed 20 runs off just nine balls with the help of three sixes to secure the win for India Maharajas. Yusuf remained unbeaten on 50 runs off 35 balls for India and Tim Bresnan took the most wickets (three) while conceding only 21 runs for World Giants.
