The final of IPL 2023 saw the four-time champions Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and the Hardik Pandya-led Gujarat Titans (GT) locking horns at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Monday, May 29.
Coming in to bat first after losing the toss, Gujarat Titans got off to a thunderous start to the game as Shubman Gill and Wriddhiman Saha took the attack straight to the opposition. By the end of the powerplay, Gill and Saha had notched up 62 on the board.
Displaying his scintillating skills, the 23-year-old Gill looked set for another big score after being dropped for 3 by Deepak Chahar. However, as Ravindra Jadeja came in to bowl the seventh over, the veteran Indian all-rounder did well to limit both batters in the over.
Conceding just five runs in the first five balls, Jadeja finally managed to deceive Gill off the very last ball of the seventh over. As the ball turned outside off, it was the lightning-quick stumping of skipper MS Dhoni, effected in just 0.12 seconds to send Gill packing.
As Gill missed the delivery, Dhoni collected the ball and stumped the 23-year-old in a flash. The video of the stumping has been doing the rounds on social media as fans and many renowned cricketers around the world were in awe of the evergreen skills of the legendary Chennai skipper.
Gill was dismissed for 39 runs in 20 balls; his innings also saw him become the second-highest run-getter for an individual in a single seasons, surpassing Jos Buttler’s tally of 863 runs in 17 matches in 2022. Gill finished his season with 890 runs in 17 matches. Meanwhile, even in the twilight of his career, Dhoni continues to impress with his skills behind the stumps and even with the bat as well.
