The exhilarating T20 action continued in the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2023 on Monday (13th February) as England and Ireland Women took on each other in the Group B encounter. England came into the match after registering a comprehensive victory by seven wickets in their first game against West Indies while Ireland were playing their first match of the tournament. Ireland captain Laura Delany called it correctly at the toss and elected to bat first at Boland Park, Paarl.

Openers Amy Hunter and Gaby Lewis gave a decent start to Ireland adding 35 runs in 5.1 overs. Hunter failed to turn her start into a big innings as she was dismissed by Charlotte Dean after scoring 15 off 14 balls. Her dismissal brought Orla Prendergast to the crease who nudged the ball around for singles as Lewis was looking to build on her innings.

However, their partnership didn’t last long as Prendergast was cleaned up by Sarah Glenn. Lewis also departed shortly after as she got dismissed by Sophie Ecclestone after scoring 36 off 37 balls with the help of five boundaries. Lewis’ wicket sparked a dramatic collapse for the Irish team which went from 80/2 to 105 all out.

Sophie Ecclestone was the pick of the bowlers for England who picked up 3/13 in her four overs. She was well supported by Sarah Glenn who picked up 3/19 in her four overs while Charlotte Dean also ended up picking two wickets for 26 runs in three overs.

Alice Capsey shined for England in the chase

In reply to Ireland’s total, England lost their opener Sophia Dunkley on the fifth ball of the first over itself sending shockwaves in their dressing room. However, Alice Capsey didn’t allow any pressure to be built on her team as she played a scintillating innings of 51 off 22 balls with the help of 10 fours and one six.

She was dismissed by Arlene Kelly in the seventh over, leaving her team 36 runs away from victory. England lost two more wickets in the form of Danielle Wyatt and Nat Sciver-Brunt soon after. However, captain Heather Knight took the innings forward and her team closer to the target. The Three Lions further lost the wickets of Knight and Amy Jones to make tough work of their chase but eventually reached home in 14.2 overs as Katherine Brunt scored the winning runs. As a result, England won the match by four wickets and retained their top position in Group B.

Twitter was abuzz with reactions on England's second consecutive victory in the ICC Women's T20 World Cup. Here are some of the Tweets:

@IrishWomensCric What a shitty game of play. Every player was hitting the ball like it is the last ball of the inning. And you guys are laughing in the dugout. Go dig a hole and never come out of it. You're a bunch of stupid and nonsense players.
