'What has he done wrong' - Twitter seething after Sanju Samson's omission for 2nd ODI
Deepak Hooda replaced Samson in the starting XI
The Indian team led by Shikhar Dhawan made a couple of expected changes to the playing eleven for the second ODI against the Kiwis in Hamilton. While the inclusion of Deepak Hooda made sense since he provides another bowling option for the Indians, it came at the expense of Sanju Samson, to the absolute dismay of the fans.
Sanju Samson got some game time under his belt in the first ODI after spending the entirety of the T20I series on the bench. The stylish middle-order batter had a decent outing in Auckland, scoring 36 off 38 deliveries in a valuable 94-run stand with the in-form Shreyas Iyer. Samson perished in the 46th over of the match in an attempt to up the ante.
However, the management decided to axe the wicketkeeper-batter for the second ODI as the team added another bowling option in the form of all-rounder Deepak Hooda. Samson's omission mystified the fans as he never seems to get a long run for the team despite performing well in the Indian colors. Their fury is understandable since the explosive wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant seems to be getting chance after chance despite his below-par performances in white-ball cricket in the last 3-4 months.
Apart from the inclusion of Hooda, the visitors also drafted prodigious new ball bowler Deepak Chahar into the team. Chahar comes to the team in place of Shardul Thakur, who was taken to the cleaners in the ODI series opener. Chahar's inclusion is a like-for-like change as the classical swing bowler is a constant threat with the ball and also provides handy runs with the bat lower down the order.
India (Playing XI): Shikhar Dhawan (c), Shubman Gill, Shreyas Iyer, Rishabh Pant (w), Suryakumar Yadav, Deepak Hooda, Washington Sundar, Deepak Chahar, Umran Malik, Arshdeep Singh, Yuzvendra Chahal
