Australian Test skipper Pat Cummins will succeed Aaron Finch in ODIs after Cricket Australia announced his appointment as the ODI skipper on October 18 (Tuesday). Cummins becomes Australia's 27th ODI skipper and the first pacer to hold the position after impressing in his first year as a Test captain.

At present, Cummins is with the Australian squad participating in the ongoing T20 World Cup 2022. Meanwhile, the netizens have expressed their disappointment with David Warner not being given the captaincy role in the white-ball format.

To note, the left-handed batter was banned for life from leadership positions for his involvement in the 2018 ball-tampering scandal but Cricket Australia has set in motion a process that could see it removed.

I have thoroughly enjoyed playing under Finch: Pat Cummins

"I have thoroughly enjoyed playing under Finchy and have learned an enormous amount from his leadership," Cummins said in a statement. "They are significant shoes to fill although we are extremely fortunate to have a one-day squad with a huge amount of experience."

Finch, who will lead Australia at the ongoing T20 World Cup, retired from ODI cricket last month after a poor run of form with the bat. Apart from Warner, all-rounder Mitchell Marsh, Steve Smith, and Alex Carey were other possible candidates to lead the Aussie side but the management named Cummins as the new leader in the 50-over format.

The express pacer recently said that he might not be able to play every ODI match because of the number of matches Australia play in all formats and that someone like Warner could step in when he was absent.

"We are very fortunate to have a number of high-quality leaders and senior players across all formats," Cricket Australia's Ben Oliver said. "The Board and selectors agree Pat is the ideal choice to lead the ODI team through the next period including the 2023 World Cup."
