WI vs SA 2024, First Test, Day 2 Review: Bavuma, de Zorzi knocks solidify South Africa

Day 2 of the first Test between the West Indies and South Africa went smoothly after a rain played spoilsport on the opening day, with only 15 overs of play possible. West Indies all-rounder Jason Holder had sent opener Aiden Markram packing for a meagre score of nine runs in 34 deliveries. 

Day 2 began with South Africa resuming from 45/1, with Tony de Zorzi and Tristan Stubss on the crease. Both the batters managed to hang around for a while, scoring 78 and 20 runs, respectively. Skipper Temba Bavuma played a marvellous innings, scoring a gritty 86 off 182 while David Bedingham added 29 off 45.

South Africa’s middle-order put in a resilient effort after Ryan Rickleton was dismissed for 19 as Kyle Verreynne scored 39 off 87 in the middle. As the day approached the end, Wiaan Mulder and Kagiso Rabada went back unbeaten on 37 and 12, with the visitors managing to post 344/8.

As for the West Indies, Jomel Warrican has been the highest wicket-taker so far with three wickets to his name while Kemar Roach and Jayden Seales have taken two each. As the third day approaches, South Africa will aim to maximise their lead, with Mulder and Rabada expected to pile some more runs and take their team closer to the 400-run mark.
