WPL Auction 2023: Twitter reacts as UP Warriorz trump Mumbai to sign Deepti Sharma

The UP Warriorz made the headlines during the ongoing Women’s Premier League 2023 (WPL) Auction as they splashed INR 2.60 crore to sign Deepti Sharma. The star Indian all-rounder was placed in the top INR 50 lakh bracket and as expected, bagged one of the biggest deals. The Warriorz beat the Mumbai franchise in an intense bidding war for the Uttar Pradesh-born star.

Delhi team opened their bidding for Deepti while Mumbai joined in soon. Gujarat Giants were the third team to join the battle as the price started taking a sharp turn. UP Warriorz joined as a fourth team to bid for Deepti and they seemed determined to win the battle.

Mumbai and Warriorz took the bid price past the INR 2 crore mark. Mumbai management backed off after Warriroz raised the bid to INR 2.60 crore and no other teams raised the paddle after that.

The 25-year-old has been India’s key all-rounder across formats since making her international debut in November 2014. She ranks second in the ICC T20I all-rounder’s chart and third in the bowler’s chart and is India’s second-highest leading wicket-taker in T20Is, with 97 wickets from 86 innings. She is also closing on the 1000-run mark in T20Is and considering her form with the bat, she will be a great asset for the Warriorz. 

Deepti is currently with the Indian national team in ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2023. She gave India an opening with Javeria Khan’s wicket in the opening clash against Pakistan but didn’t get a chance to bat as India recorded a crucial seven-wicket win.

She was the leading wicket-taker in India’s last T20I Tri-Series 2023 in South Africa with nine wickets. The left-handed batter captained Velocity in the Women’s T20 Challenge 2022 and will also be a potential captaincy choice for the inaugural Women’s Premier League 2023 season.
