Something unprecedented happened in the second game of the BPL 2019-20. The game between Cumilla Warriors and the Rangpur Rangers ended up being completely one-sided, so much so that the Warriors bagged a mammoth 105-run win to kick off the tournament on a great note. Dasun Shanka was the star in this victory. Defying all the odds, on what seemed to be a tough surface for batting, he pulled off an innings that not many would expect. This, when combined with the efforts of the bowlers, resulted in fireworks for the team.
After they opted to bat first, the Cumilla Warriors lost the wicket of Yasir Ali on the first ball of the innings. The other batsmen also found it tough to get going. Even though the likes of Bhanuka Rajapaksa, Soumya Sarkar, Dawid Malan and Sabbir Rahman got off to starts, they didn’t seem comfortable. Moreover, they ended up eating a lot of deliveries and scored their runs at low strike rates. Thus, it didn’t seem as if the Warriors were heading towards a big total.
However, Dasun Shanaka absolutely changed the course of the innings as soon as he came out to bat. He belted the bowlers to all corners of the park and showed great intent. His unbeaten 31-ball 75 helped his team reach a respectable total of 173/7 in 20 overs.
The Rangpur Rangers only left with embarrassment in the chase
Just three batsmen got into the double figures for the Rangpur Rangers in the chase. It was nothing but an embarrassment looking at the way that they batted. Mohammad Shahzad looked good with his 8-ball 13 initially. His partner, Mohammad Naim, struggled and got out after crawling his way to 27-ball 17. After these two fell, the wickets kept tumbling one after the other. Mohammad Nabi (11) was the only other batter who scored more than 10 runs.
In the end, the Rangpur Rangers were bundled out for 68 runs in 14 overs. Al Amin Hossain picked up three wickets while Soumya Sarkar and Sunzamul Islam accounted for two scalps each. The fans were left dejected with this effort from the Rangers. However, the Warriors’ fans were elated and congratulated Dasun Shanaka for his terrific knock.
