Southern Brave have continued their domination in the Women’s edition of the Hundred. On Friday, July 30, the team, led by Anya Shrubsole, beat the Birmingham Phoenix by eight wickets at the Rose Bowl in Southampton. Danielle Wyatt failed to score in the Brave’s first two games. However, she went on to notch the Player of the Match award for her unbeaten 40-ball 69 in the run-chase.

Amy Jones comes to the party

After being put in to bat first, the Brave racked up 140 on the board. Shafali Verma and Evelyn Jones set the tone for the innings with a 58-run stand for the opening wicket off 45 balls. Amanda Wellington gave the Brave their first breakthrough, dismissing Verma, who scored a 20-ball 22. Wellington also got rid of Jones, who had smashed six fours on her way to 33 runs off 29 deliveries.

Thereafter, skipper Amy Jones and Katie Mack stitched together a partnership of 72 runs for the third wicket. Jones played beautifully at a strike rate of 161.54, staying unbeaten on 42 off 26. Mack contributed with a quickfire 22-ball 31 before being run out. For the Brave, Shrubsole was the only other wicket-taker after she sent back Erin Burns for a golden duck in her last set of five balls.

Wyatt and Dunkley step up

The Brave didn’t make the greatest of starts after Smriti Mandhana skied one off Burns to perish early. However, Sophia Dunkley stepped on the gas and took on the Phoenix’s bowlers. She scored 41 runs off 23 balls with seven fours in a 60-run stand with Wyatt. Sophia got out in an unfortunate manner after he was run out at the non-striker’s end by a misfield from Abtaha Maqsood.

Following her dismissal, Wyatt took charge and made sure that the Brave chase the target down with 18 balls to spare. She didn’t let the required rate go up and smacked five fours and four sixes in her knock. Stafanie Taylor had her share of entertainment as well. The West Indies veteran hit three fours on her way to a 14-ball 22. For the Phoenix, Burns was the only wicket-taker.
